Well, today we enjoyed an afternoon playdate with our neighbors Melonie & [her daughter] Gabriella. We hit the neighborhood park and the girls had wandered off the play-turf area to explore the grass--and what did we see flying through said grass??

It was way less intimidating b/c it was an infant one only about the size of my pinky--but it was flying across the top of the grass right by Gabby's foot! At first I thought it was a lizard...but then we noted the lack of legs and were like "oh my gosh!" and boy did we get those girls out of there fast!!
The himehabu are very plentiful on Okinawa, but are deadly. To make matters worse, the anti-venom works only once--so if you are bit, you can never return to Okinawa (on the military's dime, anyway). The treat you and put you on the next plane outta there!

OMG!!!!! How scary! I would have completely freaked. That is not the way you want to leave Japan :-)
We saw a snake in the grass at the playground area at Carl Cowan when the kids were playing. Don't think it was venomous, but it was still frightening to think the kids could have been right next to it.
